Charles was the only son of Harriet and Charles Gillespie. He lived at 3 Promontory-Terrace, Whitley Bay, Northumberland.
He enlisted in the army at Gateshead, Durham.
Charles fought in the Western European Theatre. He died on 31 July 1917 aged 34.
Charles is buried at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Ypres (Leper).
