Wilfred was the son of Thomas William, Head Master, and Martha Hewson, who lived at St. John's School House, Bright Street, Middlesbrough. He had one brother called Joseph Taylor Hewson. He was educated at both the Armstrong College and in London, and received a BA. He gained an entrance exhibition at Armstrong College and had passed Intermediate Arts both at Newcastle and London. Wilfred was a musician and organist of much promise. Wilfred attended the University Officers' Training Corps whilst at Armstrong College. Wilfred joined the Northumberland Fusiliers, 9th Battalion in December 1914 and later attained the rank of Lieutenant. He served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from December 1915. Wilfred was severely wounded at the Bluff (Ypres Salient) 1st March 1916 and invalided home. He re-joined his regiment in July 1916 and served continuously on the French front until his death. He was mentioned in despatches for gallant and distinguished service in the field. Wilfred died on 25th October 1918 aged 23 of wounds received in action at Bermerain. He died at the No. 59 Casualty Clearing Station from the wounds he'd received the previous night. This was during the Battle of Selle phase of the final advance in Picardy, which lasted from 17th to the 25th October 1918.

Wilfred is buried in the Awoingt British Cemetery in Nord, France.
