Roland was the younger son of Isaac Whitfield and Margaret Stobbart. He was educated at Rutherford College, Newcastle, then Armstrong College. Roland served in the Royal Flying Corps. He was made temporary Lieutenant on 23rd September 1917. Roland died of injuries received whilst flying on 6th March 1918.
